If you value the belongings that you have in your home, here are some steps that you can take to keep them in good condition.
Invest in custom-built wardrobes
If you have lots of footwear, clothing and accessories in your home that you get a great deal of pleasure from wearing, then you should consider replacing your wardrobes with custom-built ones. The reason for this is that a custom-built wardrobe will help you to keep your clothing, shoe and accessory collections in excellent condition.
For example, if you have a lot of cashmere scarves, you can design a wardrobe that comes with a built-in, pull-out scarf rack that will allow you to neatly hang each scarf on its own rail on this rack. This will ensure that your scarves don't get wrinkled like they would if they were folded up and placed in a drawer or wrapped around a coat hook and that they are easy to locate when you want to wear them. Likewise, if you have a lot of designer high heels, you can get a set of shelves built into the wardrobe that is made to accommodate and display your entire collection. By putting them on a set of shelves like this, rather than putting them on the floor of the wardrobe (which could easily lead to them getting trampled on and scuffed), you should be able to keep them in perfect condition for significantly longer.
You can also ensure that the rails in the wardrobes are long enough to allow you to hang up all of your bulky garments (like your winter coats and thick jumpers) without you having to squish these items onto the rails. In addition to preventing these garments from getting creased, having enough space on the clothing rail to keep these bulky items separated from one another will also make it much easier for you to notice and quickly address any moth infestations before they get out of control and destroy the garments in this part of the wardrobe.
Run a dehumidifier in humid rooms
If there are rooms in your home where you store a lot of valuable belongings and where the humidity levels can get quite high, then you should start using a dehumidifier in these areas from now on.
For example, if you have an open-plan kitchen and living room, then all of the humidity that is generated by the activities in the kitchen area (from cooking, boiling the kettle, using your steam iron, washing dishes, etc.) will affect the items in both this area and in the living room. If you keep a big collection of books in the living room, along with a lot of valuable electronics and expensive throws and cushions, the humidity from the kitchen could not only cause the paper in the books to warp and the electronics to short-circuit but could also lead to mould forming on the aforementioned soft furnishings. By actively reducing the moisture levels in the air with the dehumidifier, you should be able to prevent these belongings from developing humidity-related damage.
