Ways to Protect Your Timber Floors from Furniture Scuffs

Timber flooring is an asset to any home, but for your timber flooring to stand the test of time it needs to be looked after. One of the biggest threats to the longevity of wooden flooring in the home is the effect that furniture can have on it. Moving around furniture or keeping furniture in one place for a long time can leave marks on the floors that are unsightly. With just a little bit of effort, you can prevent the worst from happening and ensure that your beautiful flooring stands the test of time. Here are some tips for you to consider.

Check the furniture. Many people are completely enamoured with the rustic beauty of vintage furniture, and while it can add real character to a room, it's a very good idea to check the bottom of the furniture before you commit to placing it on your wooden floor. If it is necessary you should sand down any rough areas before moving the furniture into your home in order to prevent damage.

Use furniture pads. Even when a table or chair has smooth legs, the force of those legs coming into direct contact with the floor can cause scuffs and dents. Fortunately, this is quite easily remedied with furniture pads, which can be bought in all kinds of materials. There are some pads that will stick to the bottom of the furniture and some that will screw in. A screw-in option is preferred if you want to be assured of no slippage at all, but you should also be aware that a screw might do some damage to the furniture as well. If you haven't managed to go shopping for furniture pads yet, put a scrap of material underneath your furniture until you get the chance to do so.

Attach wheels to furniture. If you are the type of person who likes to move your furniture around, it would be a really great idea to attach wheels to the furniture. This means that when you move a cabinet or chest of drawers from one position to another, you can move it around easily and without as much risk of scraping and scuffing against your floors.

Invest in an area rug. Although wooden floors are very beautiful, a statement rug on top can look very striking and add a touch of luxury to an interior space. As well as looking beautiful, it has a practical use because you can put a piece of furniture on top of the rug; this way the rug absorbs the force of a chest of drawers or dining table instead of the wooden floor itself.

About Me

The DIY Demolition Doctor

I was always one of those enthusiastic, do-it-yourself kinds of guys even though I had received no formal training in building techniques. Over the years, I've taught myself how to build new structures and to make them look good, too. I noticed, however, that there is little advice out there about how to demolish parts of your home – essential if you want to add an extension or to start from scratch. That's what my blog is devoted to – DIY demolition jobs. I hope you'll find it a useful resource with tips about what you can do in your own home and what you ought to leave to the professionals.
